Are you prepared to win?
/
I can be a bit obsessive. A good friend once told me: “I love how you don’t just do things, you over do them.” The first time I quit drinking, I stopped for 12 years. When I decided to finally “lose the weight” I lost all 12kg in just a few months.
Pushing things to the extreme can be a double edged sword though. In my life it’s produced some of my greatest achievements. It’s also produced car crashes, a drug overdose and landed me in hospital a few times.
Fortunately, time and experience make for wonderful moderators. They’ve taught me, slowly but surely, the importance of mindfulness, balance and contentment. These act like speed bumps that slow me down from over-do to mere can-do.
But even after all this time, there are still some things I’m just not prepared to do.
Like lose.
Turns out obsession is closely related to hyper competitiveness. I really, really enjoy competing.
And winning.
Time has taught me something else too. If you’re not prepared to lose, then you must be prepared to win. The will to win though, is not nearly as important as the will to prepare to win.
Bobby Knight put it well: “Everyone wants to win but not everyone wants to prepare to win. Preparing to win is where the determination that you will win, is made.”
