Asking questions can be very helpful. Asking the right questions can be life altering. I’ve asked myself a lot of questions lately...
Asking questions can be very helpful. Asking the right questions can be life altering. I’ve asked myself a lot of questions lately...
Many years ago I came to a fork in the road. I decided to resign from my role as an IT manager at a bank and take a 60% pay-cut for a position as a leader in the non-profit sector.
The next 12 years didn’t really get any easier. There were never any bonuses or shares. There were multiple years where we got a 20% reduction in salary instead of an annual increase. There were even months where the non-profit could not afford to pay us at all.
For a type-A like me it’s easy to wrestle with the question of WHERE I would be today if I’d stuck with the corporate sector. But I’m beginning to realize the more important question is WHO would I be today...
During those 12 years I met so many amazing people and learnt so much. I got to run a complex and growing organization. A privilege and challenge that changed me forever.
Would I have read all those leadership books? Would I have written hundreds of newsletters and reports? Would I have done over 10,000 hours of public speaking? Would I be a trained counselor? Without the financial pressures, would I have started my own boutique consulting firm?
