Beating the virus: We only need one crazy idea to work

 /

Now more than ever we have to cultivate loonshots. If we explore 1,000 crazy ideas and 999 don’t pan out, that’s fine. All we need is one.

The world is between a viral rock and an economic hard place. Many believe we are facing a dilemma.

Some very smart people are advocating we go all in on lockdown to suppress the outbreak.

Some equally smart people look at the economic meltdown that would follow a lockdown and ponder whether that strategy is even feasible.

It might be a false dilemma. I believe it’s time to start thinking outside the box. We need to look for creative ideas that will allow us to save both lives and preserve economies.

One example I heard about yesterday when New York Governor Cuomo said it’s possible that "hundreds of thousands of people" have already had Covid-19, didn't know they had it, and recovered.

He argued that everyone should therefore be tested for antibodies so they could go back to work and keep the economy going.

These kinds of ideas come from keeping an open mind. Now more than ever we have to cultivate these loonshots. If we explore 1,000 of them and 999 don’t pan out, that’s fine. All we need is one.

This is not healthcare versus the economy. It’s mankind versus the coronavirus. Forget the gold price and gold medals. Prospect those crazy ideas so we can strike scientific gold and beat this thing.
