Company size matters but one size doesn’t fit all
/
Is it better to work at a small company or a large corporate? Many people ask this question. To any reasonable person the answer is simple and obvious...
It depends.
There are two big reasons it depends. Size matters and one size doesn’t fit all.
Tell me the size and structure of a company and I’ll be able to predict it’s nature fairly well. Size does matter.
But that nature won’t be one dimensional. What I mean is, there will be both pros and cons for every size.
There are many ways to define what is a “pro” and what is a “con”. What is better for you might be worse for me. So when it comes to where you work, it’s not a case of one size fits all.
It’s true that working at a corporate may feel quite different from working at a startup. But whether it’s better to work for a small, medium or large company will depend largely on you as an individual.
It is helpful then to figure out what you prefer. And to combine that with what you know about the nature of different types of companies.
Speaking of nature. Bigger animals live longer but also expend more energy. Does that sound familiar?
I suggest you keep the benefits of your company size in mind when you complain about the draw backs. Animals can’t have their cake and eat it. And neither can we.
