Don't compare yourself to others. Compare yourself to prior versions of yourself

Comparison is not a new concept. People have said it’s bad to compare yourself to others for thousands of years. We’re all familiar with the nauseating ups and downs of the comparison coaster. Rolling from feelings of pride & superiority to jealousy & envy.

I did read some new advice on the topic recently. It’s made a big impact on me and I wanted to share it. It comes from Brad Stulberg, author of the Passion Paradox. He tweeted a few days ago:

“Don't compare yourself to others. Compare yourself to prior versions of yourself.”

I’m super competitive so I love that this allows me to still compare myself to something. But what I’ve discovered is it’s a much healthier form of comparison.

Comparing myself to others who have fitter bodies, fatter wallets or more success in business quickly leads to feelings of dismay. Comparing myself to me five years ago though...

That was before I went to see a dietician. Learnt about nutrition, body composition and exercise. The me today eats more whole foods, runs regularly and even plays indoor soccer. The Dave of today has lost over 10kg of fat, gained some lean muscle mass and has a resting heart rate of 48.

There are stronger, leaner & fitter people than me. That’s great! I’ll try to LEARN from them and COMPARE myself to me.
