“Dream work!”

If you say the following phrase to my daughters aged 9 & 12:

“Teamwork makes the...”

They will answer you immediately and emphatically:

“Dream work!”

I’ve drilled this into them from an early age because it’s something I believe in fundamentally.

Yesterday at Iress we had lots of infrastructure and service related issues to fix. It was a Sunday and many of my team members had already worked hard all weekend.

But they jumped in as they could to assist each other. We even had colleagues from other teams, countries and time zones get on Slack and Zoom calls to provide advice and guidance.

I’ve been in similar situations in my early twenties, but I didn’t have people around me to help and once ended up in hospital with a panic attack because of it.

So I will continue to unashamedly indoctrinate my kids. I will make sure they know that no person is an island and that teamwork makes the dream work.

(And I’ll make sure they know that asking for help is winning.)
