Give the elderly the first hour at grocery stores every morning

80% of COVID-19 fatalities are people over 60. So why not give them the first hour at grocery stores every morning? Sanitized trolleys, stocked shelves and less close contact. Its a win-win-win.
They say that necessity is the mother of invention. This was evident on Facebook yesterday when Darren Cahill came up with a brilliant idea.
We know by now that the elderly are at greater risk of ending up in serious condition from COVID-19. According to the Chinese National Health Commission more than 80% of fatalities were people over 60.
Darren suggests that supermarkets dedicate the first hour of each day to the elderly. The day would start with freshly sanitized trolleys, doors and tills. It would also reduce their chances of close contact with younger infected people who are not showing symptoms.
Stores would typically have restocked too, so this idea has the added bonus of helping the elderly access basic supplies without having to fight the crowds in the mad rush that’s become so typical in grocery store isles.
I would love to see Woolworths, ShopRite Checkers, Spar and Pick n Pay make this happen here in South Africa. If anyone has senior management contacts at these companies please take a moment to forward this idea to them.
I have loved ones over 60 and so this idea really struck a chord. If we think outside the box - and of others - then we can emerge from these challenging and unprecedented times stronger and more united than before.
