How about changing the things you can’t accept?

There’s merit in accepting the things you cannot change. But how sure are you it’s impossible?

“I‘m no longer accepting the things I can’t change. I‘m changing the things I can’t accept.” - Angela Davis

I’ll be thinking about this challenging idea for years to come. Of course some things are impossible to change but this statement makes me reconsider whether the required change is impossible or simply very hard.

There’s lots of things we could theoretically change. But we are unwilling to put in the effort, take the risk or get out of our comfort zone to make it a reality.

Some changes require patience and long term thinking. The question is: Are you okay for things to still be like this 5 years from now? If the answer is “no”, then it’s worth rethinking whether you really can’t change it.

Some things can’t be changed directly but they are part of a complex system. Could you change it indirectly? You might not know the exact cause and effect relationship but does that mean you are completely powerless. What if you simply threw a spanner in the works?

We joke about how often computers, printers and routers are fixed by simply switching them off and on again. Imagine refusing to try that because you won’t fix something unless you understood exactly how the action resolved the problem!

Fate is a powerful force but so is Conviction, Courage and Creativity.
