I’ve been involved in a number of important projects so far this year. Some have made better progress than others. The biggest difference?
Planning.
(Not perfect planning, just planning.)
Professionals are often resistant to planning though. We think that because things almost never work out exactly as planned, that planning isn’t necessary.
On the contrary, imperfect plans are exactly what’s needed!
Planning forces us to think and prepare which positions us for success. It creates discussion, steers us toward asking questions and helps us to consider multiple courses of action.
We can always adjust our plans once reality becomes more clear. This is why Dwight D. Eisenhower famously said:
“In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.”
I won’t discuss it in detail today, but plans - especially when drawn out visually - add massive value in terms of expectation management, coordination and communication.
