It’s like riding a bike

 /

You never forget your first time. For me it happened when I was seven years old. I was nervous. Not sure if I could do it.

Fortunately I had older siblings who were experienced. They explained what I needed to do and were right there with me the first couple of times.

It felt a little bit like I was flying. 35 years later and I’m still able to do it. It’s like riding a bike. In fact, I’m talking about riding a bike.

It’s virtually impossible to balance on a bicycle when it’s standing still. That’s the mysterious, scary thing every first time rider has to embrace and overcome.

You start in an unbalanced, stationary position and take a leap of faith. Then at some point you realize that moving forward somehow makes the bike feel more stable.

This is a beautiful metaphor for many aspects of life. We all pine for balance and progress. Unfortunately we often sit around waiting for those things to come to us.

In reality, movement is what makes balance easier. We learn not by waiting but by doing. It’s only by first putting yourself in an unstable position that you experience what if feels like to stabilize.

That kind of practical learning becomes part of who you are. It’s not words in a book somewhere. It’s in your gut. It’s like riding a bike.
