Its human nature

One of my favorite writers is Seth Godin. He’s written a lot about marketing but he’s just an all-round awesome thinker.

In 2011 he wrote a short and powerful blog post about the trappings of social media noise in which he said something I’ll never forget:

“If we put a number on it, people will try to make the number go up.”

This couldn’t be more true. Its human nature and I’m certainly not immune to this effect. For instance, I definitely go into LinkedIn a few times a day to see how many likes, views and comments my daily post has received.

Many people - mostly colleagues - tell me in person that they’ve been liking my posts. This means a lot and is very satisfying.

Interestingly, I’ve noticed a trend though. Most of these people never actually click like on my posts. This would make an interesting research topic: Why people who like social media posts don’t “like-like” those posts.

Go ahead and subscribe to his blog, you won’t be sorry. You should also read his books Purple Cow, Linchpin etc if you get a chance.
