Love is the general - Discipline and will are just troops
/
Love. It’s a many-splendored thing. But too many people miss out on one of those splendors. It’s the kind of love that propelled comedian Jerry Seinfeld to stardom.
It’s loving what you do. Jerry says love is the key to mastery. Not discipline. Not work ethic. As he puts it “those things come behind it. They are the troops. Love is the general.”
Going from not being in love to being in love is almost indescribable. The word “falling” comes close though. I fell in love for the first time when I was 12.
It was exactly like Hazel Grace says in “The Fault in Our Stars”. I fell in love with technology, programming and business slowly, and then all at once. And I’m grateful it’s loved me back.
It saddens me to think how many people hate their jobs. Most learn to cope with it somehow. At least for a time. But these jobs are unfulfilling and ultimately doomed.
Like a loveless marriage where the couple stays together until the kids grow up. Something eventually happens and you jump ship to the next job. Jump and hope. Maybe this time I’ll enjoy it.
Hope won’t find you a job you love though. Better to fall in love with something and then pursue it to the ends of the earth. My career advice to my young daughters is simple. Let your curiosity guide you.
