Nervous excitement isn't just for children

The other day my oldest daughter got into the car with a very excited look on her face. As we drove to school I asked her what was going on. Her reply? Dad, today we are getting back our test scores and I can’t wait to hear how I did.

I woke up this morning to a WhatsApp message in our MBA class group saying the results of our first big research report had been posted. In fact, the last few days our WhatsApp was a melting pot full of excitement, insecurity and anticipation. It had been abuzz with nervous chatter in the buildup to this moment.

I sometimes forget that this is an MBA class full of grown ups like me with kids, seasoned professionals and business leaders. This has been a healthy reminder that nervous excitement is not just for children. Indeed the need for feedback is universal.

As for myself? I got 71% which is a “high credit”. Our lecturer said my report was a good piece of analysis demonstrating a sound understanding of strategic management principles and tools.

I think my daughters will be proud of their dad. And today I will be the one getting into the car with an excited look on my face.

Who is keeping score? Apparently all of us :)
