Overcome Entropy

Housekeeping in Business

The 2nd law of thermodynamics says as time goes on the net degree of disorder of an isolated system will always increase, or at least stay the same.

It’s called Entropy and in plain English means that all things tend towards disorder.

What is a law in nature is also a tendency in business. At my company we inject a lot of external energy into our “closed system” to overcome entropy and even reverse it.

Off the top of my head:

Product upgrades. Hardware refreshes. Good documentation. Quality recruitment. Staff training. Leadership coaching. Incident reports. Disaster recovery tests. Internal audits. Penetration testing.

The list goes on and on. It’s easy to underestimate the powerful forces of entropy in life and in business. I shared the below quote with all the engineers in my division a while ago:

“An evolving system increases its complexity unless work is done to reduce it." - Meir Lehman

As a leader in technology especially we should not just be working IN our teams/departments etc but ON them.

So whether you are a leader by title, seniority or even just a natural thought leader, keep injecting external energy into your area at work consistently over time and you will see a noticeable difference in a year from now.
