professionals from amateurs

One critical question I’ve explored in recent years is what separates professionals from amateurs.

One critical question I’ve explored in recent years is what separates professionals from amateurs.

“The apparel oft proclaims the man”... I’m sorry Mr. Shakespeare but it’s mindset not clothes that make us what we are.

One of the best primers I’ve found is on fs.blog. A few of my favorite key differences are below, but you really should just read the whole thing (multiple times).

(1)

Amateurs have a goal.
Professionals have a process.

(2)

Amateurs value isolated performance.
Professionals value consistency.

(3)

Amateurs give up at the first sign of trouble and assume they can’t do it.
Professionals see failure as part of the path to growth and mastery.

(4)

Amateurs don’t have any idea what improves the odds of achieving good outcomes.
Professionals do.

(5)

Amateurs go with the first idea that comes into their head.
Professionals realize the first idea is rarely the best idea.

(6)

Amateurs think in absolutes.
Professionals think in probabilities.

Leadership application:

At an individual level these are mindsets. At a team/org level these become culture. And culture is one of the biggest predictors of performance.
