I’ve spent a lot of time reading about, talking about and thinking about salaries and bonuses this year. It’s felt a bit like compensation is everywhere I look.

In my day job I was part of an annual salary review process for about 35 people a few months ago.
The online side business I co-founded a few years ago hired two new staff as it opened its first bricks & mortar store.
I had my own salary reviewed this year which ended up being a very humbling and enlightening experience.
It was also the hottest topic at the Unconference I attended earlier in the year.
And in my MBA so far we touched on remuneration in both the Strategic Leadership and Managerial Finance courses.
One of the things I’ve developed a strong personal conviction about is that it’s unlikely the world will respect my true value if I don’t do so myself.
The little story below I saw @schlaf share on Twitter is unverified but makes the point well:
One day Picasso was sitting at a cafe. He drew a sketch on a napkin.
A lady recognized him and asked how much she could pay for the napkin.
Picasso said $20,000.
The lady was shocked, “But it only took you two minutes to draw.”
Picasso replied, “No, it took me my whole life.”
