Seeing The World Not Just As You Are

I want to hammer an awesome insight home today.

Ever wondered why we choose to study the world through the lens of so many separate subjects? It’s really just a practical way to group some things that are related.

But, the universe doesn’t neatly divide itself into physics, chemistry and mathematics. Human nature, for instance, is complex and doesn’t respect the boundaries between leadership, economics and biology.

Seeing the spectrum of scientific & professional disciplines as just different ways to look at the world is so powerful. Each one a unique tool with which to learn and solve problems.

Looking at the world using a single discipline is like doing DIY using just a hammer. Hammers are fine, but the problem with being a hammer is everything starts looking like a nail.

The solution is to take a multidisciplinary approach. To learn things both specifically in your main field and broadly from other fields.

“I paid no attention to the territorial boundaries of academic disciplines and I just grabbed all the big ideas that I could. If you skillfully follow the multidisciplinary path, you will never wish to come back. It would be like cutting off your hands.” - Charlie Munger

Nail down this principle and you start seeing the world not just as you are, but as it truly is.
