The basics are beautiful and effective

How many times have you overheard a conversation between two of your favorite authors? What’s that? Did you say zero?

It might be time for you to look into a radical new app called Twitter. I enjoy it when people I respect Tweet thought provoking stuff. I love it when they start replying to each other.

A great example was yesterday when James Clear (Atomic Habits) kicked things off with this:

“There are all kinds of cheat codes laying around, but they usually look boring. The cheat code is often the obvious thing. It's ‘the fundamentals’ applied consistently and without distraction. There are many things people know work, but don't actually do.”

To which Brad Stulberg (Peak Performance) replied:

“Simple is not easy. People love hiding behind complexity.”

Brad then shared some simple, science backed fundamentals for fitness, diet, work and life. Here’s a summary with a couple of my thoughts mixed in:

Move your body often. Sometimes hard.

Avoid processed foods. Especially sugar. Don't eat too much.

Eliminate distractions. Jot down a handful of things every morning and get them done.

Show up. Mood often follows action.

No caffeine after noon. Main lights off after dinner/sunset. Lamps with yellow light. No news or work. Chill. Go to bed. The more consistent the better.
