The biggest room in your house is always the one for improvement

“It’s so easy to think that we were in the dark yesterday but we’re in the light today... but we’re f-ing in the dark today too." - Joshua Waitzkin

Who is this guy and why should we care what he says? Because his unique life has allowed him to master the art of learning and unlearning.

He was a chess prodigy who drew with World Champ Garry Kasparov in a simul game at just 11. The movie Searching for Bobby Fischer is based on him. He won multiple US championships and became an International Master at 16.

At 21 he moved away from chess to study Chinese martial arts. He was drawn by a love for eastern philosophy and meditation. He also wanted to be a total noob and begin a learning process from scratch.

Within a few years he won multiple world championships. Of course. I guess you can say he knows a fair bit about competition, high performance and art.

I can’t wait to read his book The Art of Learning. It discusses the learning process and performance psychology.

I laugh at the me from 10 years ago. I was such a comparative idiot. But I will almost certainly look back at myself 10 years from now and laugh too.

I can choose to believe everything I think. Pretend that I’ve got nothing more to learn and unlearn. But then the joke is on me.
