The disaster that didn't happen

Our daily lives are so reliant on tools and technologies. In fact, our modern lives are heavily dependent on them.
Our daily lives are so reliant on tools and technologies. In fact, our modern lives are heavily dependent on them.
So when things go wrong it’s only natural that we are frustrated. It’s easy to get upset. What is much harder, is to get excited when things are working.
Mikko Hypponen said it perfectly on Twitter earlier this week:
“Rarely is anyone thanked for the work they did to prevent the disaster that didn't happen.”
The truth is that technology rarely “just works”. It only works because people have put in tremendous effort and skill behind the scenes.
True professionals understand the link between planning and success. The measuring tape is much more than just a tool. It’s the unsung hero of success.
Today you will use a hundred different things that all “just work” because somewhere an engineer, designer or developer measured twice and cut once.
I’ve had the privilege of working and learning from a number of great planners over the last few years, and I want to highlight two today:
Ryan Smith - In my opinion one of the very best network engineers in South Africa. A consummate professional and pleasure to work with.
Boshoff Martin - A master at organizing teams and ensuring value is created and flows. I often brazenly copy & paste Martin’s ideas.
