"The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place." - George Bernard Shaw
This is a quote you can never un-read. I read it ten years ago and keep coming back to it.
It applies to almost every area from conversations and meetings to messages and presentations.
Today’s post was inspired by Tim Chilvers who posted earlier about upping your presentation game by using creative slides instead of the typical walls of text method aka “death by PowerPoint”.
Tim has every right to talk. He taught a business acumen course that I attended in the UK last year. From the first minute to the last his teaching was engaging, energetic and entertaining.
I really enjoyed it and consequently learnt a ton. Put it another way, words were not just spoken, but rather communication really took place.
In fact, I enjoyed that business class so much that I’m now doing my MBA. Thanks Tim, you’re at least partly responsible for me no longer having weekends ;)
Seriously though, this leads me to close with another of my favorite quotes about communication:
"In classical times when Cicero had finished speaking, the people said, ‘How well he spoke,’ but when Demosthenes had finished speaking, they said, ‘Let us march.’" - Adlai Stevenson
