Two things are needed

Does your team or company have strategically important initiatives or projects on a list somewhere that you never get to?

Of course you do. No organization is immune to the tyranny of the urgent. I remember many meetings in which one such initiative was discussed at my company over the last year.

Everyone agreed it was important and would add value. Everyone also agreed it would be very hard to carve out time for. One well intentioned suggestion was to do a little bit every week and complete it over the course of a year.

This weekend my division teamed up with two others and just did it.

Now to be clear, lots of planning and preparation was done leading up to the weekend. Also, this was attempt number 1. We only achieved 90% of our goals - and will need to give it one more go - but it does remind me of one of my favorite quotes:

“To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan, and not quite enough time” - Leonard Bernstein
