Uncover capabilities rather than just experience
/
I really think one can be good at hiring. In fact, I think one can be excellent at it. But being great at anything requires deliberate practice and a willingness to learn.

Nilofer Merchant recently wrote an interesting article for the Harvard Business Review. Their most interesting point was that we should ask interview questions that uncover capabilities rather just experience. The idea is that instead of asking, “Have you done this or that?” we could ask, “How would you approach doing this or that?”
I like this because when I’m hiring I’m not looking for someone whose done time, I’m looking for someone whose able to contribute going forward. It’s about past tense and elapsed time vs future tense and outcomes.
