What’s the deal with mediation?

 /

Many people misunderstand meditation because they think it has to be spiritual. But mindfulness is really just about practicing to be present.

Hearing people like Ray Dalio and Tim Ferris talk about meditation got me interested enough to finally download a few guided meditation apps.

It’s been two months and I’ve managed to do a session virtually every day except for two weeks while traveling. I’m glad I’ve tried it and have even started to see some of the desired beneficial effects.

One of the key take aways from my journey so far is an understanding of mindfulness. Meditation helps you develop a greater appreciation for the here and now. It’s about being more present.

Practically speaking I’ve started feeling less inclined to grab my phone every time I don’t have something specific to do for 5 seconds.

My ability to truly listen to everyone from colleagues to my wife and daughters is slowly improving. This is something I’ve wanted to get better at for years.

In terms of apps, for now I’ve settled on Headspace. I like that the material is not spiritual. They also do a good job of easing you in slowly but surely. And it doesn’t hurt that the look & feel, animations and overall usability is top notch.

Good advice for beginners is that getting distracted by your thoughts isn’t failure. It’s supposed to happen. Realizing it and gently bringing your focus back to the present is exactly what your practicing!
