Why skill beats talent

 /

Skill doesn’t ask who you were years ago, it simply asks how capable your are right now.

I recorded my first vlog this weekend and it was abysmal. I reshot the video half a dozen times and still looked awkward and sounded ridiculous.

But next weekend I’m going to try again. I’ll force myself to watch each of my feeble attempts so that every take is slightly less embarrassing.

Eventually I’ll post my first video somewhere like LinkedIn and perhaps some people will say they didn’t know I could do that. And I’d say that used to be true.

Maybe in a few years my videos will be quite good. At that point people might think “Wow, that person is so talented”. The truth is that what you’re seeing is skill not talent.

Talent is natural APTITUDE, whereas skill is the ABILITY to do something. Skill doesn’t ask who you were years ago, it simply asks how capable you are right now.

A growth mindset, perfect practice and time combine to produce what I call overnight success that was years in the making.

I’ll keep these horrific first practice vlog recordings. In years to come it will remind me that Skill > Talent.
